Charles Cottis died from unspecified causes on 28th October, 1914 while serving with the 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division which had been fighting on the Western Front since the start of the war in August, 1914. It is not known if he had been wounded and sent back to hospital in England but this seems a likely explanation.
